5 Reasons Why the Ketosis Diet is Better than Counting Calories
The Ketosis Diet. Is it really better than counting calories (or Calories In Calories Out)?
Why the Ketosis Diet is Better than Counting Calories
If you don’t know, the Ketosis diet is a brand new type of diet that centers around eating less than 20 – 50 carbohydrates per day. Instead, you eat tons of healthy fats and proteins.
When on the Ketosis diet, your body will automatically switch into “Fat Burning” mode. That’s right, instead of your body burning your carbohydrates and sugar for energy it will instead melt the fat right off of your body.
Now I’m sure you’ve heard the conventional wisdom.
Track your calories and consume less than your body needs to maintain your current weight, and you will lose weight.
Now while this is true, to a certain extent, I’m going to show you why the Ketosis Diet is MILES better than just counting your calories alone.
Reason #1 – Metabolism
When you lose weight with naturally high levels of insulin (which nearly everybody counting calories will be doing) then you actually slow down your own metabolism.
Isn’t metabolism something we want going faster?
Exactly.
The hormone insulin makes it VERY difficult…near impossible in fact…for your body to burn fat.
And so, when you diet with high insulin and eat a caloric deficit then your body will start lowering your metabolism. Yikes!
The solution? Ketosis.
When your body is in a low-insulin state, your body responds to a low level of calories by burning stored fat INSTEAD of slowing down your metabolism.
Reason #2 – Thermogenesis
Thermogenesis is the process of heat production in organisms. It occurs in all warm-blooded animals and is activated by eating a Ketosis diet.
You see, instead of lowering your metabolism like counting calories does, Ketosis will instead increase your metabolism directly through the process of thermogenesis.
How?
When your body is in a low-insulin state (Ketosis), your white fat cells act as if they were brown fat. What does this mean? Brown fat produces more heat in your body. Therefore, your body burns more calories while in Ketosis through the heating up of the fat cells.
And this metabolic process has absolutely nothing to do with how active you are.
Reason #3 – Ketones
Ketones are unused fat calories that you exhale out of your breathe and urinate when your body is in Ketosis.
Again, the Ketosis diet increases your metabolism because these unused fat calories are expelled out of your body before they can be stored. The liver converts unused carbohydrates (glucose and sugar) directly into fat. But, the liver cannot convert unused ketones back into fat.
Reason #4 – Ghrelin
Once again, we see that losing weight with high levels of insulin is an absolute train wreck waiting to happen.
Your body actually makes you more hungry on a calorie counting diet. Yep.
When you have a high insulin level your body increases the amount of calories it needs because of the hormone ghrelin. Ghrelin is the hormone that makes you feel hunger.
However, losing weight with the Ketosis diet does NOT make you more hungry. In fact, you become LESS hungry on Ketosis.
Reason #5 – CCK and Leptin
Yet again, when losing weight with high levels of insulin is a mess.
Why?
Because of the hormones CCK and Leptin.
CCK is the hormone that makes you feel full immediately after eating. Leptin is the hormone that makes you feel full hours after eating.
When you try to lose weight with high insulin (i.e. NOT in Ketosis) then you directly decrease your body’s levels of CCK and Leptin.
Sounds bad, right?
However, when you lose weight with the Ketosis diet your CCK and Leptin levels remain intact so your body will feel full and make it easier for you to actually follow the diet.
